This re-lei was inspired by the popular Micronesian style ginger lei. The design was created using sealed air packing pillows found in shipping boxes and wine corks saved from a restaurant. Both post consumer products were in good condition prior to the construction of the re-lei.
The packing pillows were cut in half and rolled to create the thin tubular shape of the ginger flower. The individual pieces were secured together with cotton string using a simple overhand knot. The stem pattern was developed by twisting one end and overlapping them.
The wine corks were hand cut to create small spherical shapes. Each piece was strung together using fishing line. The strand was then tied on to the "ginger" lei to mask the cotton string. The cork pieces created a shell like pattern to complete the re-lei design.
